How to Plant Garlic (step by step)

White Scribbled Underline

Prepare your garlic bed.

A good garlic harvest starts with good soil preparation--composting and tilling give garlic its best, most maintenance-free start.

Separate the individual cloves of garlic

To separate cloves for planting, use a dull-edged blade to loosen the first clove, then the rest will easily come apart with your fingers.

To plant, you may either make a trench or trenches or you may use a trowel or seed dibble to make individual holes.  Holes or trenches should be three inches deep.

Space garlic cloves at least 6 inches apart on all sides.

Plant cloves with the pointy stem-end up and the fatter dried root end down.
